President’s
Message:
Well, the summer is almost over. It seems like
we just had the spring Tri-Cities Luncheon. 189 members attended the
luncheon from Albany, Schenectady and Troy. As usual due to the generosity
of our members, the food pantry and Armed Forces collection were
successful. Twenty boxes of canned and packaged goods were delivered to St
John’s-St Anne’s food pantry after the luncheon. In addition 8 large boxes
of personal items were sent to Armed Forces members serving in Iraq.
Our Holiday
Luncheon is scheduled for November 17th at the Elks Club. The 17th
is a Thursday, not a Wednesday due to a scheduling conflict at the
Elk’s club, so we are breaking a long-term tradition of Wednesday
luncheons. I mention this so I don’t get calls wondering if we got the date
wrong since we always have had the Luncheons on a Wednesday in the past.
Old Timer’s
night will be held at the West Albany Fire Department. This moves us to a
less formal environment and attendees will be able to stay after the event
to socialize, play cards, or just “hang out” if they want to. The date for
Old Timer’s night is October 25th.
Flyers for
the luncheon and Old Timer’s Night are enclosed. I look forward to seeing
you there.
Here is an
update on the status of the Albany Life Member Club. We are in good shape
financially. We have been within budget for the last three years and the
fundraising from the luncheon raffles along with yearly grants from Verizon
for our literacy projects have kept us on an even keel.
On the personnel side, we are in need of additional help in terms of member
volunteers and involvement with club management. We have not had a vice
president for some time. I have now been president for over two years, (the
constitution specifies a two year term) so we need someone to step forward
in this capacity for the future. We would also like to fill a treasurer
position on the board and fill the Vice President vacancy. These positions
do not demand a lot of time but they are essential to the future
continuation of the Club and Life member activities. If any one has an
interest in helping in any of these offices, feel free to contact me at
518-869-5695 and I can explain the responsibilities of the position and the
time requirements, etc.
We also would welcome additional help in the volunteer area of Toy Repair,
Talking Book Repair and some of our “once a year projects” such as
distributing flowers or candles for the Cancer or Arthritis Foundations.
Again I can be contacted or I can get you in touch with the Pioneer who
currently leads the activity.
I hope you are all in good health and I know we are all thinking of our
members in Florida and along the Gulf Coast who have had such a difficult
time with the hurricanes the past two summers.
